It is hard to critique a lecture about science rather than architecture, because it is about data, facts and research result. In science, one cannot critique on other’s solution without the support of his own scientific research. Unfortunately, I am not a scientist in energy related field, and I will not be able to offer any counter argument to Nocera’s proposal.Nocera began his lecture by writing down a formula for energy consumption. The equation is E=N*(GDP/N)*(E/GDP) (Energy Consumption=Population*GDP per Capita*Energy Consumption per GDP.) GDP per capita is known as wealth of the people and energy consumption per GDP is known as energy intensity. Examining the formula, it does not yield any information mathematically, because it is an identical equation. We can be rewrite the equation by introducing new variables in both nominator and denominator on the right hand side, and relate energy consumption to our own interest. Despite the ridicule of this formula, Nocera tried to tell us that energy is a complicated issue, where sociology, economics, science and technology are all involved. It also implies that global energy issue is not the problem of a single profession, but requires the attention of different disciplines. Every profession should try to contribute the problem with their own expertise. Even if the problem could not be solved entirely by a single approach, we will still have a good chance to avoid the problem with the collective effort.Nocera explained the energy problem quantitatively with the energy data collected over the past years. The current usage of power is 14TW, and the estimated usage of power in 2050 is 30 TW if conservation is well executed. Due to the growth of 3 billion population and energy increase in 3 billion of “non-legacy” world, e.g. undeveloped territories, the energy consumption will double even under an optimistic estimation. “Solution to the energy challenge, in my opinion, rests in providing the non-legacy world a carbon-neutral, sustainable energy supply. Energy for the non-legacy world: cost is the first issue, not efficiency. In fact, the higher the efficiency, the higher the cost.” The key factors to the problem are cost and carbon-neutral.For the legacy world, the cost of burning fossil fuel is significantly lower than other methods. However, the model cannot be brought to the non-legacy world. The low cost and high efficiency are achieved by high expense of machines and infrastructure that supports the system. Current energy system cannot be downsize to fit into the non-legacy world due to Balance of System costs. Centralized power generation and power grid is not a cost effective method for the non-legacy world, and a distributed and “personalized” system needs to be developed. Nocera pointed out the fact that the crisis of burning fossil fuel does not lie in the depletion of resources, but in the generation of carbon dioxide. The total amount of oil, gas and coal left on earth can support our energy consumption for more than hundred years. Although the rise of temperature has not been proved to be directly related to CO2 concentration with an exact math formula, through statistics, data has shown that high correlation exist between temperature and CO2 concentration. As proposed by Kyoto Protocol, the general consensus is that decreasing the use of fossil fuel will help to fight global warming. Debating whether or not one should believe in the relation between CO2 and temperature is meaningless, and it should be left for the scientist to prove. Most of the people should be concerned about how much money to spend on decreasing CO2 according to their own belief, and the CO2 issue becomes extremely economical and political. Finding out new and inexpensive ways to harvest the additional 16TW of energy without emitting green house gas is the ideal solution.Nocera enumerated the current possible sustainable power generation schemes. He argued that even with the advancement of technology, biomass power, hydraulic power, wind power, and nuclear power will not be able to fill up the gap. The current technology is simply not sufficient. He gives an example of a urban planning conference in 1898, where people are concerned about the increasing amount of horse manure, as the result of increasing carriage transportation, will become the new urban crisis. However, with the development of automobile industry, the problem was never mentioned again. He urges for a paradigm shift in energy. He believes the solution rests in artificial photosynthesis.The concept of photosynthesis is “to fix the solar energy through suitable photochemical reactions with new compounds that master the photochemical process that hitherto have been the guarded secret of the plant”[1] The research by Nocear, focus on the first part of photosynthesis, which turns water into hydrogen. Although Nocera’s example of a pool of water being enough to solve the energy crisis sounds extremely promising, we should not be confused by the role that water plays in the process. The method does not imply a new source of energy, but a new way of storing energy. It is a method that stores solar power in the form of hydrogen, which comes from water, with efficient and inexpensive process, not a method that produce power from water. The power from the sun turns the water (low potential) into hydrogen and oxygen (high potential), and later generate energy by supplying the hydrogen and oxygen to the fuel cell. The difference between current solar technology and the new technology is that instead of storing the energy with inefficient battery cells, the energy are stored within the chemical bond of hydrogen through the process of water electrolysis. The invention of Nocera is the inexpensive cobalt-phosphate compound that replaces platinum to serve as the catalyst for the electrolysis process. As explained by Nocera, “cobalt and phosphate are readily available….We can coat surfaces with less than 10 nanometers – or, less than one-ten thousandth the width of a human hair of cobalt phosphate, and the catalyst is good to go.”Because of the self-healing property of the compound, unpurified water can be used in the process and turns into clean water as the byproduct. It is the perfect process for the non-legacy world, which solves electricity and water issue simultaneously. According to lecture, Nocera’s method is not too far away from commercial application. If this technology becomes commercialized, it could change the pattern of energy generation and transmission dramatically. As architects, we should be concerned about how the concept of “personalized energy” could change the topography of human habitation and how the new and existing building could be adapted to this new technology.
